Although it’s part of the Southern Scenic Route, the area more commonly known as the Catlins is often overlooked when tourists and travellers are planning their New Zealand itinerary. Located in the very south-eastern corner of the South Island, on the surface it would seem there’s little reason to venture all that way when there’s a whole island of snowy peaks, glaciers and thermal pools closer to the ‘tourist track’.
