Learn how to build a natural swimming pool to create a cooling summer home for your home. Whether you want to practice your dolphin diving or relax the day away on a raft, swimming is one of the perfect pleasures of summer. With a minimum of materials and without an arsenal of chemicals, you can build an idyllic water oasis in your own backyard and thwart the sultry dog days in summer.

Although fairly common in Europe, natural swimming pools (such as those pictured above in the backyard of an Austrian family) are in their infancy in the United States. Ask most U.S. pool contractors to build a swimming pool in the backyard and chances are they will roll out a long list of goods, including rebar, gunite, fiberglass, chlorine, and an energy suppressing filter system.

But in recent years, a few builders and a growing number of homeowners have learned to build swimming pools without relying on mass-produced materials and chemical additives. They have discovered that it is possible to build swimming pools that are more about building with nature and blending into the natural landscape.

Natural swimming pools use gravel and clay instead of concrete or fiberglass and water plants instead of harmful chemicals and complicated mechanical filter systems. The plants enrich the pool with oxygen, support beneficial bacteria that consume debris and potentially harmful organisms, and provide living space for frogs, dragonflies and other aquatic life. The result is a beautiful, ecologically diverse system that can be built relatively cheaply. (A natural pool can be built for as little as $2,000 if you do it yourself, while conventional pools cost tens of thousands of dollars). Natural swimming pools don’t need harmful chemicals, are fairly low-tech, and once established there’s just a call for a little management. You don’t have to tap the pool every fall. Except for the occasional filling, you only fill the pool once.
