Have you ever thought about building a storage tank pool for your garden? My husband and I have learned how to do it through many trials and errors, and in this blog you will find detailed step-by-step instructions, including a video that will make your own storage tank pool a breeze!

With five young children under the age of seven, we don’t like to go anywhere, and this storage tank pool has been an amazing, affordable addition to our garden for both us and our children. If the temperature is above 70° F (we’ll even settle for 60° F on an early spring thaw), our children play in it for hours every day. This is our fourth summer using it, and it has held up wonderfully.

Materials
8 foot (diameter) round storage tank pool made of galvanized steel: I would have liked a 10 foot one, but they didn’t have one at our local tractor supply store and the 8 foot was just perfect.

Sand filter pump: You don’t need to have a pump if you just want to empty the pool when it gets dirty or if you use chlorine or bromine tablets. However, I strongly recommend buying one for the long term.

Pool filter sand: We only used some sand from our sandbox, but this type of sand was recommended in our pool filter system manual.

* Additional filter systems:
Saltwater system: It pretty much makes its own “natural” chlorine. You can use this in addition to the sand filter for optimum performance.

Cartridge Filter Pump: If you are looking for the cheapest option, you can purchase this cartridge filter pump, but you will need to change the filters every two weeks. I have heard that these do not take very long, but they are cheaper upfront costs.

Pool Water Shock: Kills bacteria and algae in a big chlorine shock.

Piston valves: When we originally made our storage tank pool, we simply went to the hardware store and bought some metal parts to connect the hoses (which came with the pool filter) to the pool, but now, four years later, we are finally getting things right.
