“She shed” delight. Great for home office or backyard entertaining and sleeping …
One of the best ways to look out over your garden for extended periods of time is by the seclusion of a stylish backyard room, also known as a cabana or studio – and, some would even say, an ennobled barn. If the ‘room’ is under chewing gum trees or between flower beds, the smell of eucalyptus, the murmur of bees and the singing of birds will add to the pleasure. This is especially the case if you use your little hole for daily work or a hobby. A backyard room not only brings you closer to nature, even if the weather lets you down, but it gives you the extra space you might not be able to squeeze out of your house. Whether you approach an architect, builder or prefabricated model builder to design your room, ask them the following questions to decide if a rear garden room is for you.
1. What do people want from a backyard room?
Backyard rooms come in many guises. Most are designed to adapt to a number of applications, including that of a home office. “A small cabin or studio is a place to escape the chaos of a home office,” says John Chesterfield, owner of Melwood Cedar Sheds. “This way, people can enter their office and start their day and leave the housework behind. It also means that at the end of the day, they can close the door to their work until the next morning. ‘
2. Why invest so much style in such a small space?
Even if it is only used for storage, a backyard room is still superior to a barn because of its insulating properties and weather resistance. “It’s great for dry storage – for things that can be affected by moisture, such as books and computer equipment,” says Chesterfield. What’s more, it can be switched to a more conventional room if necessary, and there’s no doubt a room in the backyard can add a lot of charm to the garden.
3. Do I need municipal approval?
Many people choose to install a backyard or an outdoor room at the bottom of the garden, but remember that if it is too close to a border or fence, or if it exceeds a certain size, you may have to apply for a building permit. In most cases, however, you do not need approval.
